Marc Johnson’s Bass Restoration
Over the years, one of the greatest things in my professional life has been seeing people I admired as double bassists—and whose LPs I used to buy—become my friends and clients.

Great names in the world of double bass, both in jazz and classical music, whom I always sought to listen to and watch live, now visit my home, commission the construction of instruments, and bring their basses here to be restored.
Others have taken advantage of our work in New York to have their instruments restored there.
Among the most technically skilled and creative jazz bassists in the world is our friend Marc Johnson.
I believe every bassist reading this page will know who he is.
For those who don’t, it’s enough to say that he was one of pianist Bill Evans’ bassists on several recordings and concerts.
Marc has been a longtime friend, and whenever he comes to Brazil, he plays one of our instruments.
With a career marked by good taste and musical refinement, Marc has always worked with the greatest musicians of his time and is known for his care with the double bass sound.
At the end of 2005, he brought this French double bass, a 19th-century Jacques, to be restored and have its acoustic potential enhanced at our workshop in São Paulo.
It was a complex and lengthy restoration, and some process phases are shown here.

This was the situation with the bass when it was first opened.

Old instruments like this one almost always have many restorations, some well done and others not so much.

Damage caused by poor restoration and termites.

Above, a detail of the maker’s brand, burned in with a hot iron, and a restoration label from the 19th century.

Marc was thinking about selling this instrument, as he was never satisfied with its sound and some of its measurements.
But judging by the look on his face while trying the bass at the workshop, it’s clear he gave up on the idea of selling it.

This relationship of friendship and trust, combined with hundreds of conversations with great musicians, forms the foundation of my knowledge, alongside the technique I learned from Enzo Bertelli and have developed over more than four decades.

The exchange of experiences and knowledge is always enriching, as both sides learn.
We play, listen, and share impressions and opinions about things that are somewhat abstract, difficult to grasp for those who are not musicians or lack experience.

Playing the instrument is essential for a luthier who aims to reach a high level in their profession.
While I played and we talked, he was able to experience the sound of the bass being played from various distances.
Marc gave many compliments and was very pleased with the work, which made us extremely satisfied.

He was really happy and excited about his “new instrument”.
