Restorations

Nothing is as damaging to a double bass as a poorly executed restoration, whether due to technical errors by the person doing the work or the use of inappropriate materials.
Look at the examples on the side.
We restore instruments with the same care and expertise, from the simplest models belonging to beginning students to double basses by well-known and important makers from various parts of the world.

Scott La Faro’s bass (an 1825 Abraham Prescott, shown on the left) was severely damaged in the accident that tragically took the life of the greatest bassist of the time. The instrument even caught fire on the upper left section of the top and the upper left rib.
Restored in a specialized atelier, the instrument can still be played and seen as it was before the accident—now part of 20th-century music history.
Had it merely fallen to the ground and then been taken to a carpenter or some “handyman,” we might never have known this story.
Periodic maintenance should also be carried out in the same atelier, allowing for consistent monitoring of how the wood evolves over time. Several aspects must be carefully observed, such as the “fatigue” of the bass bar, the wear on the fingerboard, the bridge, among others.

Only a specialized luthier can carry out work responsibly, using techniques recognized and passed down by masters of the art of sound making.

Use of a fiber optic endoscopy device to observe inside the instrument and perform procedures that would require opening the double bass.
This makes it possible to carry out internal work with precision. To achieve this, we have developed tools and devices such as clamps and punches, and we use a wide range of materials, including acrylic and high-power magnets.
A good restoration should go unnoticed, and to be as non-invasive as possible, it is best to use techniques that avoid opening the instrument and preserve as much of the original material as possible.
Always seek out the most recommended and experienced luthiers in your area.
